I lived overseas in Italy for three years, and often vacationed in Germany. I also have a 530i which includes the sport package tires. I assume yours does not, because you are worried about the speed rating of the tires. Regardless, your car will go almost 130 mph right now, and the 16 inch tires you have are speed rated to something close to that. It is rare, even on the Autobahn, that you will want to go faster than 130 mph. Most of the time you will find yourself cruising with traffic in the 100-110 mph range.

Also, much of the autobahn is speed regulated. It is strictly enforced and fines are steep. Typical posted speed limits are 130kph (80 mph) down to 100kph (60 mph). These are electronic speed limit displays that can vary (I think) based on traffic conditions, road work, etc. Italy's autobahn (the autostrada) is always speed limited to 130kph but never enforced. Between Rome and Naples is the fastest traffic I have ever seen, anywhere. You probably won't drive down there very often.

Drivers in both countries are more alert and competent, but when accidents occur they tend to be gruesome and fatal. I don't care what you are driving, if you are going faster than 130mph you are dead if you get into an accident.

However, if you insist, there are ways to get rid of the speed limiter. Not sure what all is available for the 530i, but two solutions are a performance chip and the shark injector. Both methods overide the software that limits your speed and both will allow some performance gain as you will be able to take advantage of the higher quality fuel your car will be drinking.

Which reminds me of one other thing. Gas mileage, at least in my car, was pretty good up to 100 mph. After that it really tapers off. If you are in the military the gas prices are round $2.00 per gallon. If you have to pay the local rate that more than doubles. Why don't you wait until you get there before you lay out the bucks. Decide after driving there if it is worth the money you are considering investing.

Just my $0.02

Mike (2001 530i SPP and other stuff)
