About a block from the house, the temp gage on my 97 540i (87k miles) goes to RED. I stop the car & steam starts coming from underneath the hood. Coolant is spilling out into the street. Took it to the BMW mechanic & he says something about the radiator hose or cap breaking. Says I need a new radiator. My only question is why can't I just get a new hose? Sorry if this sounds naive but I'm not a car expert & $800 is a lot to pay for a brand new radiator. I checked a couple archives and a few people seem to have this problem with the "older" models.
