Well, I finally got rid of the stock non-sport suspension on my '97 540i, which definitely had to go. I went with Koni Sport shocks and H&R sport springs (p/n 29764). These springs lower the car 1.3" in front and 0.75" in the rear. And the handling is unbelievable even with the stock 16" wheels and squishy Continental all-seasons. It certainly handles like a dream. I had no idea the difference would be so great without getting larger wheels and low-profile performance tires, which of course are next on the list (most likely 18" or 19" RD2s). I attached a few pics below, also showing the outcome of my recent Shadowline trim installation/chrome trim destruction ;-) Enjoy!
