I picked up a new 2001 M-Coupe (with the new S54 motor - 315-hp/251-lb) about 5 weeks ago. Note the M3, just the M-Coupe. Strictly for a "fun" car.
Because of the new toy the '99 540iA sport has been out about 3 times since... well, my wife feels a bit sorry for it so she's forgoing the minivan occasionally and taking it out. :-)
All I can say is that all the rave reviews about the M-Coupe ('01 or even previous model) are true. What a fun car! I love my 540, but when I get in it now I feel like I'm driving a bus and I'm wondering "Where's the acceleration!?". I know I've been spoiled now, and that the 540 is still quick, but it not in comparison to the new M's with the S54.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the 540. I'll have it at least until spring, but I may move on to something else for a sedan in the spring.
In the meantime, anyone interested in a 3.15 rear-end diff with a Quaife ATB (limited slip +) for their 540 (manual or auto)? I had this setup built by my local BMW service centre's master mechanic about 8 months ago. There's only about 3000km on it. Cost to me was about US$2000. Make an offer if you're interested. :-)
