Don't know about reliability, but I'd guess the 6-cyl be more reliable than the 8:
- fewer components
- more engines in service out there
- BMW's had more practice with 6-cyl
- mechanics have, too
- if breaks down engine repair less expensive
- less power = less wear on drivetrain

Also, the 6-cyl has rack-and-pinion steering, while 8-cyl does not (more precise BMW feel to steering wheel).

The 8-cyl certianly is a hoot to drive, especially with the 6-speed manual tranny, but both cars are great and different animals.


Hi guyz..I am not really familar with the E39. I currently driving the 735i and wanna look for a newer car. Is it a good idea? Should I get a 528i or a 540i? Which one is more reliable? Is the 540i worth the money? Please let me know guyz...currently lookin for a E39...THanks a lot!
