The iL's delivered to North America all had self leveling as I understand. If the system failed under a previous owner it could have been removed. Removal requires spring replacement among other things in order to maintain correct suspended height.

I suspect you are merely out of adjustment. First, check the rear strut towers for signs of leaking fluid. Second, how are your headlights doing? The ellip's are highly directional. If you are getting the characteristic flash backs from on-coming drivers, your back end may be too low.

If the system is operating, it does have an adjustment. The cost at the dealer is minimal when done in conjuction with some other work. Or get the Bentley.

: I have a '89 735il with 106k on it and the rear end is starting to sag. If I have a self leveling system should the car even out when it is started or is it because my springs are old. Also how do you go about maintaining a self leveling system?
