Check all your instrument cluster grounds, there are some on BMWs under the dash at one point, and some models have a couple on the steering column behind the wheel itself. Don't have an ETM that goes back to the '81 system. If it was the first generation system it might not be wired the same as the '82-'87 cars. Look to see if your throttle is controlled by a motor/cable or a vacuum motor instead of the electrical version.
The early Sevens had a bad habit of too little grounds on the cluster circuit. As the cars age you get weird stuff when the flashers are used, or a glowing altn. light at night even though the altn. checks out as well as the regulator.

Add a ground wire or two to the grounding point under the dash when you find it. This might help future problems. I had to run extra grounds and a heavier battery ground cable to tame my old '80 733i as it approached 15yrs. After that, it was golden and no more quirks.
