:: The car started smoking every time I turned it on (white thick smoke), and idle was very rough (car shaking a lot). In my opinion, it was the engine block problem, because I had the exact same symptoms with a 93 740i and BMW did the repairs for free. The dealer said I had a pressure leak on a seal, said it had nothing to do with the block, and charged me $750 for the repair. I consulted with some folks on this forum before the repair and most agreed with me that it sure looked like the engine block corrosion problem. I sent a letter to BMW asking them to comment on the issue, (with copies of all repair invoices and printouts of this forum) but after three weeks no answer came. The car is a 95 740iL with 75k miles, BMW CC told me it was manufactured 9/95, allegedly with the "new" engine block. But hey, a $70,000 car smoking with 70k miles? My dad's Oldsmobile has more miles and no trace of smoke. I believe BMW should look into my case, and be fair.
