My E32 has a self draining feature for the oil filter cannister, and when the bolt is removed, it opens a channel below it for drainage before removing the filter. Trick is to give it some time to drain before removing the cover and old filter. Note that there might always be a little leakage due to relaxation of the o ring seal when the bolt and cover is initially loosed, but that small amount can usually be caught by wrapping a rag around the seal point just as you loosent the nut. you'll also note a little o ring on the bolt, which is the seal to the drain channel I mentioned. It should be periodically replaced.

: I change my oil myself in my shop and find the removal of the canister filter element to be rather messy. I slop oil on the brace behind the alternator when I take off the top to the filter container. Anyone have an idea on an easier way ?
