: Slow seepage from the heater core moisturizes the innards and promotes the growth of mold. The recirculated air that is caused by the oftentimes defective recirculation control make matters much worse by concentrating the smell.
: The fix is 1. get the heater core replaced - a big job that takes at least two days but the warranty should cover it, and 2. get the recirc control to work properly, probably by replacing the control unit. It is a good idea to replace the microfilter now that you have a working system.
: This problem appears to be common to 97and 98 740s.
: I went through all this - it took several trips to the dealer - but they were very helpful and finally corrected it all!

: : : Bill, thanks for the followup. I'll check with Honda; sounds like they might have the solution. Thanks again... Rick

: : : : Has anyone experienced and permanently corrected the mildew smell that occurs within the dashboards ac unit? The has me spraying OZIUM down the vents etc.... not a lasting solution at all. I've tried running the heater for extended intervals, doesn't seem to help. Durring the winter, when the AC is never used, it seems to go away. But once summer approaches, its back after using the AC just a coupl of times.
: : : Rick, try running the air in the winter,Chrsler has gone so far as to wire their a/c so that every time the defrost is on, the air is on. A friend who is a Chrysler tech told me that they do this specifically to avoid the problem you're having. Another idea would be to check with the local Honda dealer; they dealt with this problem some years back and I believe they developed a chemical to kill the bacteria which causes the smell. Hope this helps.

Bob, thanks for the experience. Has this particular problem been documented by BMW... to help me convince them that it needs to be done. My dealer says I'm the only one complaining about it. Also, did the whole dash and console have to be removed and was it all installed back in perfect shape?
I have to tell you, I'm contemplating trading the car in for a 740i Sport... this mildew smell is what has been convincing me to do it! And, I'm not so sure that I want to hassle the dealer to get them to tear into the car, if I going to move on anyway. I'm kind of indecisive right now... any wisdom from you world? ...Rick
