: : If the 7 uses the same catalytic converters as the 5, there was a manufacturing defect in the converters used on at least some of the 1997 cars. Apparently the guts come lose from the case. I also had to replace both on my 1997 540. This was an "infant mortality" issue.

My '97 has 34k miles. The standard stuff to expect are brake pads every 15-20k miles; rotors every 30-40k miles; front end links and/or sway bar bushings (source of clunks, grunches and other sounds in cold weather); emergency brake cable guide (source of faint squeaking sound from rear end -- requires routine lubrication or replacement); clicking sound from HVAC system (stepper motors that can get annoyingly noisey and are replaceable under warranty). That's the typical stuff. Like any car with a couple years worth of mileage, odds and ends are possible. They're extraordinary cars but they're not Toyotas.
