You can get replacement/additional CD magazines from BMW. I haven't checked the cost but it shouldn't be more than $20. The CD changer in my '97 740i is the Pioneer model (i.e. there is a "P" on the top of the changer where you put in the CD's) and I can buy additional magazines at Best Buy's, Circuit City, etc for about $12. Some people do this so they can group various artists/type of music together. They then just insert the magazine they want to listen to instead of always having to load/unload the same magazine.
It's my understanding that BMW uses more than one model of CD changer and that some models aren't Pioneer. I don't know what other makes they use or have any experience with them. If your changer has the letter "P" on top, its the Pioneer model.
On the Pioneer model, the writing on the top of the CD changer faces both directions and it can be a little confusing as to which way to insert the CD magazine. The correct way is for the slot containing disc 1 to be on your right(passengers side) and the slot containing disc 6 to be on your left (drivers side). If you look at the eject button on the changer, you'll likely think the magazine should be inserted the reverse of this because it will seem upside-down. It's not and if you insert the CD magazine the other way, it will slide in easily but not come back out nearly so easily (don't ask me how I know this.).
