I may be wrong but I think the DSP is an indication that you do actually do have the Premium sound system. I have a 1995 740il with the premium sound system and I've grown to accept it and even enjoy it now, but definitely found it a bit tame compared to the souped up system I had in my previous car (1993 525i)when I made the switch to the bigger bimmer. Anyway I have not heard of anyone who has replaced the head unit probably due to its non-standard shape and size and the fact that it and intergrated system and works in conjuction with a bunch of other systems in the car, but you could certainly upgrade the speakers and maybe add a sub. Bavaria Auto has a sub that just plugs in. I added a sub myself carefully matching the speaker and amp specs to what Bavaria offers and it's been a great improvement since lack of Bass is the main problem with these systems.Replacinng the amp would be a major undertaking because the signal from the head unit gets to the amp in the trunk via optical cables but you could add amps that accept speaker level input or use converters after the factory amp.I would personally not touch anything before the factory amp just to avoid electrical complications. Most custom installers I talke to before adding the sub myself, didn't want to touch it since these cars are apparently so hi-tech with so many things that could potentially go wrong.
