The emblem seems to be fitted after the cars have reached HK, as the 'V8'/'V12' badge is not seen on any E38s in Europe.
I guess it's only fitted to cars that went thru BMW Concessionaires HK's hands and it seems to be fitted to post MY97 cars only, when the HK spec cars changed from Euro spec licence holders to Japanese spec.
