Thanks for your thoughts, I ended up calling BMW and althought their description wasn't the answer, it triggered an approach. The problem is you can't slide the outboard pad into the caliper - there isn't enough clearance and you have to install the inboard/piston pad first. The trick is to put one end of the pad into the caliper and then force the other end down into the caliper. I couldn't do this by hand, I had to use a wrench, but it slides down into the caliper reasonable easily. So to describe it another way, you put one end into the caliper with the pad being on a 45 degree angle and then force the other end into the caliper to bring it back to o degrees and properly positioned. I hope this helps someone else. I've never had to install a pad this way.
