740i is different that 740iL/750iL (archive)

In the case of the 740i, the sports package includes stiffer suspension, higher ratio rear axle, trim changes, and 18" wheels. A significant improvement if you prefer the sportier car.

In the case of the iLs, however, it is the wheels only. Still an upgrade, but not the same deal as in the i.

The big wheel iL sports should be grippier but perhaps a bit more harsh. The biggest drawback of the 18" wheels is that they are slightly more at risk of damage from potholes and curbs (less rubber), but I've never seen anyone here suggest that this is a real (rather than merely theoretical) issue.
