Climate Control fan speed programming... (archive)

My dad has a MY97 740iL, and the climate control programming is less than perfect. On hot days, while in Auto the fan speed never seems to be high enough. That is, even with the car interior at ~100F, and a setpoint of 70F, the fan will usually set itself at about 75% of maximum speed.

In addition to that, the real complaint is that it seems that after about 2 or 3 minutes, the fan speed automatically reduces itself to about 30% speed, even if the car is still really hot inside! That is, the fan reduction seems matched to a timer, rather than whether the temperature is getting close to setpoint or not.

In contrast, my MY99 540i will automatically (again, in Auto mode) run at maximum fan speed until the car is actually getting close to temp setpoint. It does _not_ reduce fan speed at a set time, but rather it gradually reduces fan speed as the temperature gets closer and closer to setpoint.

The real issue is that on the MY97 7-series, the Auto mode does not start out at a high enough fan speed, and in addition it turns down the fan speed independant of whether the car interior has actually cooled off or not.

Because of this, the Auto mode on the 7er is basically useless, and the fan must be controlled manually on hot days (at least until the car is fully cooled off).

This seems like a Climate Control programming issue on the MY97 7er, and I am hoping that it may be correctable (i.e. make it work like the MY99 5er system) by simple reprogramming by the dealer.

Does anyone know if a program update is available on the 7-series that will result in better operation of the Climate Control system?

Thanks,
Brad D
