Headlight Removal -- Help (archive)

I have made several failed attempts to figure out how to remove the headlight assembly from my '97 740i (April '97 production). As best I can tell, it appears to require the following:
1. Remove the turn-signal assembly (easy enough)
2. Remove the headlight connector
3. Remove the two Philips head screws at each end of the top of the assembly

Now, this is where I'm confused. The various instructions I've pulled down from the web seem to indicate that the finishing trim below the lens cover is removed by sliding it toward the center of the car; then, behind it are two retainer clips that are slid sideways to allow removal of the headlight unit.

No such luck with mine. As best I can tell, I need to remove the bumper to get to at least one nut below the headlight assembly. I know I'm missing something obvious so . . . help.

Thanks.
