I had the exact same problem and it turned out that the bulbs needed replacement. Bothe are less than $10.00 (Non Xenon) so it should be an easy inexpensive fix. Both would go off then come back on intermittently and when I took the bulbs out and examined them, both had brocken filaments that would connect and light up sometimes but not work at other times if the two fillament peices lost contact.

A comment

Always use bulbs that have the silver base - never the cheaper ones with the brass base (they seem to be more prone to have high resistance connections due to corrosion.

ifyou find bulbs that hae not failed yet - but are turning black - best replace them or you will be getting those messages again within 6 months.

The system checks all your exterior bulbs (except the directional signals). It does this using a resistance measurement - so anything wrong with the circuit can indicate a failure.

Also - remember to check your upper brake light when you get this message - that seems to be the first one to go (runs hotter).
