Hello all,

I am at a total loss. I have a 98 740IL with 42k miles on it.The car has been extremely well taken care of.When I passed the 40k mark my service guy suggested that I do the inspection 2.I did it.But within the last month or so I have realized that the car, when sitting at a light will ever so slightly "shake". It's not all the time but at least a couple of times a day. I used to think that maybe it was only first thing in the morning, or only sometimes when the air conditioning is on. But I can't nail it down to anything in particular. I dropped it off at BMW and explained the problem as a "rough idle." Called me later that day and said that they think they have the problem fixed. Said the catalitic convertor was bad. They also said that they performed a "smooth idle test" and it passed. Picked it up started it...seemed fine! Driving home..car felt great...little more powerfull..I'm a happy camper...not
Driving to lunch with the boss and I'm at a light and the car has that slight shake again!!!! I am clueless at this point. What could it be??? This board is a savior and I hope you guys can help me out with this one!!

Thanks

Mark

Mark, that sounds very familiar. Our '95 740 did the same thing, when the door was open at idle you could see it rocking up and down. I attributed it to the Nikasil problem. The car tested fine though, at one point they replaced the spark plugs. Helped for about a day. The only explanation I was able to get from the dealer was that these engines have a lope at idle due to their high performance nature. We unloaded the car and bought a '98 750 with 20k miles. Even this car occaisoinally will rock a little at idle. I don't worry about it anymore, the car is otherwise superb, maybe just a hair shy of perfect.
