My 97 740il do the exact same thing! It doesn't happen all the time, only once in a while. I brought it to the dealer twice (different dealer),
they both said was bad cat. converter. Both time replace the cat. under warranty, but come back the same.
I also have a 95 540i which has the old block, that one really shake a lot more than the 740il.
I really think that the 740's shake is normal, due to the high performance nature of the engine.
It doesn't bother me anymore. Enjoy your great car!
P.S. I 'm still trying to get the dealer to replace the block on my 540.

Hello all,
I am at a total loss. I have a 98 740IL with 42k miles on it.The car has been extremely well taken care of.When I passed the 40k mark my service guy suggested that I do the inspection 2.I did it.But within the last month or so I have realized that the car, when sitting at a light will ever so slightly "shake". It's not all the time but at least a couple of times a day. I used to think that maybe it was only first thing in the morning, or only sometimes when the air conditioning is on. But I can't nail it down to anything in particular. I dropped it off at BMW and explained the problem as a "rough idle." Called me later that day and said that they think they have the problem fixed. Said the catalitic convertor was bad. They also said that they performed a "smooth idle test" and it passed. Picked it up started it...seemed fine! Driving home..car felt great...little more powerfull..I'm a happy camper...not
Driving to lunch with the boss and I'm at a light and the car has that slight shake again!!!! I am clueless at this point. What could it be??? This board is a savior and I hope you guys can help me out with this one!!
Thanks
Mark
