Don't know if they are all the same, but for our 3 button system on the 98 model...

Ignition on.
Hold down 2 outside buttons until orange light flashes.
Release buttons to clear memory.
Hold end of handl held transmitter against the front surface of the ceiling unit so that you can see the orange light.
Push both hand held button and the desired button on the BMW unit.
Hold both until you see the BMW unit flashing rapidly. May take a minute.
Release both buttons.
If you have a hand held unit that cuts off too quickly, you may have to repeatedly reactivate it until the BMW unit figures it out.

Sounds kind of like a scam; put your hand on the TV and pray .... However, it worked both times tried.
