EPROM for 1993 740iL (archive)

I have been told by my mechanic that I need to upgrade the EPROM for my 1993 740iL. Has anyone heard of this and if so what is the effect of upgrading the EPROM.

Also, I ran into a problem with my car having problem reversing (automatic), I have been told by the same mechanic that Valve body has to be replace and it costs $1780 (valve body + filter gaskets etc.)

I am hoping someone knowledgeable can help me since I am going to this mechanic for the forst time.
