the V8 engines produced in those years were made of a lovely, lightweight aluminum/nickel alloy called Nikasil. Apparently Nickel reacts with sulfur in US gas in a destructive manner. Thus the cylinder walls would begin to wear away. The reason you see all of these "engine replaced at xxk miles" is that there is an extended warranty from BMW out to 6yrs/100k miles to replace the engines with ones made of Alusil, (you guessed it) an aluminum/silicon alloy which they have used with great success in the 5.0 V12 and the 4.4 V8s.

you can find out more at the 530 page (same engine), and if you ask me, I wouldn't buy a '93-'95 car that HASN'T had the engine replaced. It's not an issue of IF the block will fail. It's WHEN.

I am beginning to look for my first BMW--probably a 740i. Many times the add will say that a new motor was installed around 70 to 90K miles--is this normal for BMW engines or just poor maintenance by the owners?? I have owned several MB's and I never seen or heard of this with MB (except for totally stupid owners)-if you can help me with this please respond.
