I upgraded the wheels on my 1996 750iL to the 18 inch M-Parallel Spoke wheels. The ride quality didn't change much with my first set of tires which were Michelin Pilots however when I put Yokahoma AVS Sports on the car the ride quality did degrade a bit. What I noticed most was that as the AVS' tread wore down I got a lot of vibration through the steering wheel.

My suggestion would be to get the 18 inch wheels but don't upgrade to a really maximum performance tire such as the AVS. Strike a balance with a medium performnace tire with good ride characteristics.
