I do about 1/3 of my driving in snow & ice during the winter months. Is their a noticable difference with snow tires vs. the standard tire on a 2000 740il?
If you buy one of the new generation of snow/ice tires there is a noticable difference. Is it worth the $500-1000 purchase for a second set of wheels and tires, probably not. Your car came with all season tires, traction control and abs brakes. That should make the car fairly competant, the wieght of the car helps too. I purchased a second set of wheels and tires but my car has the 18" wheels and performance tires. The performance tires are scary on snow, the rubber compound is not pliable at low temps. Visit the Tire Rack online, they have a few substantive evaluations that demonstrate actual gains by switching.
I asked this question previously on this board with no answer. Did you find a set of wheels and winter tires in 18" form that fit the offset on your car? and what brand of winter tires?
