Since you can't seem to get a definite answer on the alternate wheels, perhaps a random answer could be a start. I see Dinan and others talking about 1" wider wheels and 255-265mm tires working which I guess is about the limit up front. This translates to about a 1/2 " change at a constant offset. I haven't looked closely at my E38, but the cars tend to have the struts positioned out toward the wheel. Your potential change on the offset is about a 1" which I would guess is too much. See if you can get a 1.2" piece of wood all the way between the sidewall and the spring perch and strut.
