Both my 98 740iL & my 2000 740i Sport make the most annoying chirp from the climate control when I am driving on the highway. You can stop the noise by turning the recirculating system on. In fact the chirping occurs as the recirc. kicks in. Try it.
By the way I had the stepper motors changed in both cars, does not fix this problem. Anybody else notice this?

Bummer about the stepper motors. The noise I was getting from my '97 was the sound of an intermittent ticking clock, which turned out to be bad stepper motors. Their replacement (along with some sort of control unit) solved it though.
