this question has been addrssed and pertains to passengers left inside without a key:
i can only speak for the 740iL/2000 -I know nothing about prior years/models of BMW:
when our car is locked by the driver from the outside with the Remote Transmitter unless the passenger is aware of the sequence (i listed below,) they can be locked inside and cannot get out themselves.
on our console, next to ''hazzard triangle'' there is a square "door-lock/unlock" button. if a person is left inside car wants safety and locks the doors with THAT button, hitting it a 2nd time will unlock the doors, so they can then exit the car - no alarm will sound.
with OUR particular car, if the doors are lock with the REMOTE TRANSMITTER by someone OUTSIDE the car, the person left inside cannot get out UNLESS they then press the ''door-lock/unlock" button on the console one time and THEN pull on the DRIVER'S door handle twice. doing that will activate the alarm but will at least open the door.
so i guess the best thing is to make sure that transmitter doesn't get into the hands of children who decide to play a mean trick on a sibling etc. and the safest is for the passenger remaining inside the car when the driver leaves is for THAT person to manually lock/unlock the door to get out or when the driver returns and the driver forget about locking with the transmitter unless driving alone.
i have no idea if this transmitter-locking situation can be programmed differently and why it is set up as it is except perhaps for the alarm system to properly function - who knows
any input is greatly appreciated. thanks
