Yes, it is the noise by the stepping motor behind the center console where it continuously adjusts the vent to the cabine. It is a problem that has been complained by many customer including me (98' 740i). They will only replace the motor if the noise becomes very loud, otherwise, they will say that it is normal. However, it will not go away completely even with a new stepper motor.


It is indeed the stepper motors, as referenced above. The normal level of noise is a barely audible, intermittent sound. When the sound reaches the noise level of an annoying clock and is frequent, the stepper motors can be replaced and, if done correctly, should do the trick. Had them replaced in my '97 about a year ago. Silence since.
