First of all, 3 out of 4 passengers in the S600 didn't wear seatbelts. Not Di, Dodi, nor the driver. Everyone knows the S Class is probably one of the safest, if not the safest, car in the world.

HOWEVER, with that said, I really have a hard time believing that the E38 7 series lags behind the Benz S in safety. First of all, even my short wheelbase 740 sport weighs in at over 4,200 lbs.! The E38 is not that much lighter than the S. In fact, if anything, it is about similar or even heavier than the new 2000-2001 S Class.

The safety features are actually more advanced than the previous generation S600 which Diana died in. So the comment that they would have had zero chance of survival in a 7 series is totally ridiculous!

Look at the 7's smaller brother, the E39 5 series. It was the best pick in crash testing by the IIHS and other agencies-- even more so than the E-Class. The E-Class is good, but mediocre compared to the 540 for safety.

So if the 7 is a bigger car with more weight than the E39, how can it NOT be safe?

If you look at sites such as crashtest.com, the 7 scores the highest marks possible across the rated categories. The overall death rate is also rated EXCELLENT, meaning exceptionally low fatalities!

All this, and not to mention the 7 is MUCH MORE of a driver's car than the S Class, which feels like a Lincoln Town Car by comparison! The only benzes that are actually decent are the RennTech or Brabus ones, or maybe the S55. The rest are for old farts....

My two cents.

You say that the S55 is decent, but not the S500....infact you said that its "Town Car by comparison" But the only diference between the two is that the S55 has some mods to the engine making the 5.0 engine a 5.5 (thus the name S55), some AMG wheels, AMG body kit, wider tires, and all that adds up to a 0-60 time thats .4 secs faster....
but they both have the same brakes, Transmission, steering.....the only other real diference besides the engine is that the suspension gets upgraded to the 600's....(the 500 is an air suspesion, and the 600/S55 is a hydrolic suspension) So its obvious that you have NOT driven the S500 and thus dont know what the hell your talking about....
And how can ya say that benz's are for old farts?!
Are you retarded or stupid? some benz's, yes. All,no. Same with every other car company....(and yes BMW too) Did you get all of that? or do you want me to make you some flash cards?
ok if you want to compare the two companys
3 rapes C (i mean no contest)
5 = E (Depends on what kind of ride you want, sporty then go with 5, if you wanna ride on clouds then pick the E, but in overall value and bang for buck its the 5 by far)
S beats 7 (the S looks ALOT nicer with the Ext, and Int I mean go look @ the pics at the websites. its handling, beats the bimmer. the advantage the S has over the 7 is the air suspension, start the car and its a lux car, push the Suspension button once it slightly stiffens push it again and its a BMW eating machine....sorry but the bimmers just cant keep up. Im sure the next generation will put up a better fight.)
