I currently have a 540i Six Speed. I'm looking to get away from a manual transmission, as I'd like to enjoy the luxury side of things. I'm looking seriously at a 2001 740i-sport.

Will I be happy with this decision??

I appreciate any advice/thoughts you may have.

The 740 will definately cater to your luxury aspirations. The sport will provide plenty of fun too. I personally really like the extra width in front that the 7 provides. The cabin is a great place to spend time. The sport should be tons of fun. I recall a couple of years ago racing down a winding mountain road with a 328i in our '95 740iL, even though the car is large it is amazingly agile. We have since moved into a 750iL with the 18" wheel package. While it doesn't have the spring and shock upgrades of the 740i sport it is great fun to tear around in.

I have had a Bavaria, 3 x E23's and an E32, all with sticks. I love the luxuary and space of the 7. I bought a 97 E38 almost a year ago and I am still going through severe stick with-drawel. I've been driving a tiptronic 323 for 2 months now and it's a fun car but it didn't cure my stick withdrawel syndrome.

The degree of involvement you have with the cluctch/stick makes the whole thing complete. Clutchless manual shifting may be good in a straight line, but it's not the same involvement. If you love driving your 5 you may hate your 7. Want to trade?
