Hello board, had a question to place for you all. Would the 2001 M5 engine fit in an E38 740I? I am debating the issue of going with a 95' 740I whose nikasil problem is no secret, and than replacing the whole engine bay with the 2001 M5 and engine accessories needed to function. Transmission would probably be upgraded to the E38 steptronic trans. Just looking for the boards opinion (and yes I am crazy)on my potential E38 M7.

Thanks
Justin

The engine would be a sure fit, adding the engine harnesses necessary to convert. However, IMHO, you should forget the Steptronic(5HP30) idea as the automatic will most likely fail behind the torque delivered from the M5, V8. Also the S62 engine(6 throttle bodies) may be too wild to work in front of an automatic.
In Europe a 6 speed was avaliable in the E-38 and the console and shifter parts are avaliable for an E-38, 6 speed conversion.

Second option is to install a 750 engine & transmission package.
