I was very lucky with my 95 740il. It was on sale for $26k @ 89k miles when I first spotted it. Everything about it was perfect until I drove it and compared it to a 96 740il. It had a lot less power and the engine wasn't as smooth. Anyway I found a lot of info about the engine problem here and during the weeks that I was driving it while negotiating with the seller it got worse and I noticed all the bad block symptoms. The price went all the way down to 22k. I thought it was a real deal at that price and bought it anyway and kept hoping for the best. The block has since been replaced and as you can imagine I'm thrilled about how it's all turned out. It was a bitch working with dealers but I'm glad that's over. Anyway I know I took a pretty big risk since this engine was pretty bad now that I compare it with the new block.
Drive a 96 or a 95 with a new block and compare it with the car yu'r looking at.
