The tail lamps between a 740i and 740iL are EXACTLY the same size. You will have a problem however with any e38 built before August of 1998. Starting with 1999 production year, they changed the wiring harness. If you are electrically inclined, I have heard it can be done fairly easily to rewire the new crystal optics lamps to fit the old wiring harness.

I have a 98 740i and except for wishing I had gotten the iL, I love the car. It is the most fun I have had driving. As much as I love my CL, the 740 is more fun to drive.



I am currently looling at 98 740i an il. Any advice on choosing between the two other than the obvious size difference. Any thoughts on buying a certified pre owned dealer car or buying from another source given the price difference from the dealer. I would also appreciate any advice on things to be aware of when shopping for this car...specific equipment ect. Thanks
