Big H: I follwed the lights reccomendations and since I am 90% highway driving, I went 10K miles and still had some green. I got nervous and changed it anyway. I personally believe that 5K miles should be the time period. Oil's cheaper than engines. In any event, remember to check it regularly no matter what you decide. The other thing is to reset the indicator lights for the oil service interval if you do not go to a BMW Service Center. I don't know if the Jiffy Lubes etc have these. You can buy one from the back of most BMW or auto magazines.Good luck and welcome to BMW ownership!
I purchased a 98 740il last October with 36k miles and the dealer performed the Inspection II maintenance, which included rear brakes and 2 new rear tires. My question is how often should I change the oil and rotate the tires or is the standard 3K miles good for bimmers also? Will I get a MSG from the console when the oil needs changing? In addition, is the local QuickLube or JiffyLube sites ok for these type of cars or should I stay with the stealer (as ED M put it). I guess I need to get my hands on a maintenance schedule book.
Thanks, BigH
