I would change it myself. I really don't trust anyone else to do anything to my car that I can do myself. This keeps you in touch with your car, and maybe also gives you enough confidence to tackle other maintenance such as brakes.

I change my oil only using full synthetics and I change it myself according to the service interval light, or once for the summer and once for the winter. So, usually it's the twice a year deal. This also means that I change it about every 6k miles. And, yes, reset using the tool, available many places.

I purchased a 98 740il last October with 36k miles and the dealer performed the Inspection II maintenance, which included rear brakes and 2 new rear tires. My question is how often should I change the oil and rotate the tires or is the standard 3K miles good for bimmers also? Will I get a MSG from the console when the oil needs changing? In addition, is the local QuickLube or JiffyLube sites ok for these type of cars or should I stay with the stealer (as ED M put it). I guess I need to get my hands on a maintenance schedule book.

Thanks, BigH
