I have the 98' 740I with DSP and I took the amp out last weekend and this is what I believe I found:
1) The amp is built by Philips.
2) It is quite sophisticated, it has built-in Digital to Analog converter (to receive the digital signal from the CD changer).
3) It has the DSP circuit built-in. The DSP control in the dashboard is just...only the control. Control signal gets to the amp to instruct the DSP circuit to change the signal.
4) The amp has low-level input for the TAPE/Radio signal.
5) The amp has switching circuit to switch between CD changer or TAPE/RADIO.

In all, I believe the only way to upgrade the amp and still keep the Dash DSP, MID control is to tap into the high-level output (14 pairs total) that goes to the speakers. This means you would need to use a multi-channel aftermarket amp that accepts high-level (speaker-level) inputs.
