You need to drive them and see what your heart tells you. My experience is with a 540ia and a 740i sport. The 540 does everything I want of a car better than the 740 (quicker, more agile, better handling, etc.) but I don't smile as much when I drive the 540. There is an intangible quality about a 7 series that makes it a more satisfying car for me.
