Just bought a 2000 740il yesterday, cosmos/grey. Question about the windshield. There is a little square right in the middle at the bottom of the windshield that looks different, less tinted or something. Excuse the newbie question, but I figure I should ask the experts!

The windshield has an infrared reflective coating and there are 2 areas that don't have the coating -- one behind the rear view mirror for the rain sensor and the other one you describe. BMW's docs describe this area as a cutout for a radar/laser detector. It makes a difference -- non rigorous testing using my V-1 detector show better pickup with the detector in the square area than mounted higher behind the coating.

I have a '00 740i Sport -- one of BMW's best kept secrets !
