Brake Linings Service Light (archive)

My '89 750il has a brake linings service light that just came on this week. Does this work off of a time trigger or does it sense worn linings. How much should I expect to pay fro a brake job? Can I use a "brake only shop toi fix it, like Brako? Your help appeciated.
