You will need to press a reset on the receiver to the garage door opener (not the hand unit, but the receiver which is usually mounted on the motor to the garage door opener on the ceiling). It should light up after pressing it for 1-2 seconds.
Go back into the car and press the button of choice one time for 1-2 secs, press it again for 1-2 secs and then press it a third time for 1-2 secs.
This should enable the button in the car to work.
I just spoke with Homelink, and here is the scoop.
The rolling code garage door openers entered the market in 1997, any car manufactured in 1997 or earlier typically does not support this technology. So if your garage door opener is newer than 1997 and your car is 1997 or older it problably will not work.
Homelink sells a kit of $60 that will support the trnasmitter in the older cars. Or you can buy a newr transmitter from BMW.

Does anyone know how to program the UT for a garage opener, I have a Sears transmitter that I think changes the signal randomly. I tried holding down the outside buttons and then select the one I want (holding it in)and hitting my garage opener until the light is steady, but the thing never works, and my wife and kids think I'm going crazy opening and closing the garage door for hours at a time. HELP, what am I doing wrong...
