Converters going bad on a 740 is about as common as changing your oil it seems. I had to replace mine on my 95 70il at 81,740 miles. I talked to the BMW rep from BMW NA about maybe goodwilling the warranty on mine since they were just out of warranty as most things occur. BMW rep offered to pay $150 on a $1200/side bill. I just ordered aftermarket freeflow converters and have been running good ever since.BMW's have high compression engines, therefore they require higher octane fuel. 740's require a higher octane fuel than we can buy at our pumps so it is wise to burn 93, I know I do. Also check your owners manual.

740iL had about a month. Just started knocking/pinging 2 days ago, but only during acceleration and on startup. Did I get a tank of bad gas maybe? Using 89 octane. Should I go to 92 or 93 octane and see what happens, or take it in for a checkup? Exhaust leak maybe? Suggestions?
