What are the major problems with a 96+ 740i or 740il. What else should I look for that can potentially lead to major problems?

No major problems. A common problem seems to be dissapearing pixels in the dashboard displays as the car gets older. The fix for this problem is about 400-600 dollars at the dealer. Mechanicaly the car is great with no significant problems.
