96 there was only the iL version no i. 1996+ benefit from the improved engine and larger displacement. HVAC steper motors are noisey after time. Mildew ordor is common, but BMW has a fix via drains and deordorizer. After that the subsequent years add more standard features like in late 97 and 98 the strering wheels tilts up and out when you exit the car, etc. One day someone will pull together all the refined features and which year and production run has them. I have a '96 and I'm very happy with it. I bought it in June 2000 with only 34K miles. I have had other problems that seem specific to my car as I haven't hear or read anythning that suggests they are common problems. Either way I strongly urge you to get a comprehensive warranty. These cars a great, but when they break, which they do, they are very expensive to fix via the stealer (dealer). My 5 year warranty has already paid for itself in the first 6 months.
