Oil filter change question... (archive)

It's time to do my first oil change on our '75 740 and I have a few questions, especially since this is the first car I've owned with a cartridge filter since my '64 Impala SS convert. Even my 325ic has a spin-on.

1. I've seen listings for plastic or metal end filters, what's the difference? Does it matter?
2. I've also seen something about a plastic spacer or support, is that only if you need to replace this thing?
3. Should the gasket/o-ring be replaced also?

Any other tips would be welcomed.
