the early cars came with metal filters not plastic then bmw started retroing cars by installing aplastic tube in the center of the oil filter housing to accomodate the later plastic filters most cars have these I recommend pulling the cap[36mm socket] & checking for the plastic insert if it has one use the plastic filter also i recommend using a factory filter & definitely replace the o-rings
