Try a different wax. I've had terrific results with Zymol Carbon -- their wax for dark color cars (I've got a '97 740i, Biarritz Blue). Choose a brand of wax that does not dry to a light haze. That's what suddenly makes chips noticable.

I finished waxing (Klasse wax) my anthracite 2001 540. I have about 3,000 miles on it and live in the SF Bay Area.
I cannot believe the number of chips in the paint on the front bumper and hood. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I have not had the car in terrible conditions; I commute on the freeway about 40 miles (total) each day.
I can't imagine what it will look like in 10,000 miles.

Any comments or suggestions are appreciated.
