soot near corner of valve cov gasket ok? (archive)

Recently bought 95 740il. It had the engine replaced just last year. I've notice a build-up of soot or sludge (not too much) near the corner of the right valve cover gasket. Should I just ignore this. Do the valve cover gaskets leak frequently?
