In July of 1996 my wife and I bought our first BMW--a brand new '97 528i, right after the new body style was released. We fell in love with the car, but were troubled by the reliability. It went back to the dealer about 16 times in 12 months for minor problems (never left us stranded though). None of the problems fell under the Washington state Lemon Law. I should add the service department was fantastic, always having a warmed up loaner car awaiting our arrival, and doing their best to makes us happy. At month 9 the dealership offered to order us a brand new car, no questions asked. Three months later, a clone of our car arrived, equipped with several additional options. I gave them a 12-month old car with 11,000 miles on it, and they gave me a car wth 25 miles on it, all free of charge. Not many other car companies would do this. About 8 months later, the same dealership offered us a new '99 740iL for dealer invoice. Couldn't pass up the deal, so we traded in the 5-series for it. What a car the 7-series is! Have been very happy with it, and it has been virtually trouble free to date. Six months ago, during a service visit, I pointed out what I considered premature wear in the lower backing of the driver seat. Without hesitation, the service department removed the seat, and had it reupholstered with new leather ordered from BMW. What more can one say? I have seen some negative postings at other BMW sites about BMW customer service, but I have experienced nothing but the best. I wish the service experience with my Cadillac Escalade was half as good as what BMW has provided. I imagine we'll own a BMW for years to come. We are very satisfied customers.
